Death Ray is (though we say it ourselves) the most exciting thing to happen to science fiction since... oh the launch of Future Publishing's SFX, a dozen years ago. (Both magazines, as it happens, come from the same creator, Matt Bielby, who also launched such titles as Total Film, PC Gamer and Official PlayStation 2 Magazine.) Death Ray is designed to be the highest quality, most entertaining science fiction and fantasy-related magazine in the UK.
"Our sort of stuff - by which I pretty much mean anything with a hint of the fantastic to it - has become a vital part of mainstream culture," says Matt. "In many ways, it's become THE most important part. Digital effects, while not exactly cheap, are now affordable enough that pretty much anything you can imagine is possible to attain on film and, increasingly, television. Today, almost all the biggest entertainment properties are science fiction: Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Lost, Harry Potter, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, even (you could argue, but with less conviction these days) James Bond."
Each packed issue of Death Ray is crammed with excellent stuff: interviews with the top authors, actors and directors, reviews of the latest SF & F releases across every conceivable media, round-ups and overviews of the best SF telly, plus tons of news and opinion, often written by the biggest names in the business.
