Filmstar and Death Ray: Possibly no more issues…

As some of you may have heard, and others who popped along the shops to pick up the latest issue of Filmstar may have feared, Blackfish's two magazines, Filmstar and Death Ray, are currently 'on hold'. What this means is that there will not be another issue of either of them along for a number of weeks – or, likely, months. Indeed, whether there will ever be another issue of either is a moot point, and at this moment in time impossible to answer. But we hope so.

Quite what the future holds for Filmstar, Death Ray – and, indeed, Blackfish – remains unclear, but we hope to have more definite news over the next week or so. Keep watching this space, because as of now quite literally anything (or nothing) could happen.

Filmstar #5: On sale now!

fs05.cover_highThe fifth issue of Filmstar has just landed (with a bit of a bump) at your local newsagent. And on the cover this issue is Up, Disney/Pixar’s latest animated extravaganza and first foray into 3D cinema, which stars the unlikeliest of protagonists for a ‘family’ movie: a grumpy, hearing aid-wearing, pension-drawing 78-year-old, who attaches helium balloons to his house in order to take it to South America (along with a stowaway scout). And while it’s hard to see the young ’uns clamouring for cuddly collectibles of the surly septuagenarian at the Disney Store, there’s no denying that the movie itself is up to Pixar’s usual lofty heights. We speak with the film’s director Peter Docter, plus Pixar’s head honcho John Lassater.

And that’s just for starters. The sky really is the limit for the October issue of Filmstar, on sale 24 September, available at the remarkably down-to-earth price of just £3.99.

Filmstar #4: Now showing at a newsagent near you!

fs04.cover_smallWe’re no bunch of softies, here as Filmstar, but have to admit to feelings of fluffiness after falling head over heels for Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer, a glorious indie romcom that is sure to melt even the iciest of hearts. Forget the usual ludicrous plots of boy-falls-in-love-with-girl-with-amnesia and suchlike, this is a far more down-to-earth tale about falling for the girl in the office, but all told through the distorted, misty-eyed lens of the lovesick, and to wondrous effect. Above all, for anyone who's loved and lost, this is a movie that simply rings true. We get involved in a tryst with director Marc Webb plus leads Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

And we continue to spread the love around in the September issue of Filmstar. It’s on sale 27 August, and at just £3.99 for 180 pages, we think it could be the start of something beautiful.

Filmstar #3 out now!

fs03.cover_smallYou really can’t miss issue three of Filmstar – it’s got a dirty great nail bomb on the front cover… Why? To highlight our film of the month, The Hurt Locker, following the (mis)fortunes of the bomb-disposal experts in Iraq. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and with as much focus on what makes the men inside the oversized protective suits tick as the business of disposing of IEDs, it’s as incisive as it is thrilling. Plus we talk to the director herself about the making of the movie.

And there’s plenty more within its 180 lovingly crafted pages (and all for the ridiculously small sum of £3.99!). Here’s a taster of what you’ll find within the August issue, on sale 30 July 2009…

Then we board the Death Ray lunar express for a trip to the Moon, or at least Shepperton, where we take an in-depth look at how Earth's satellite was remade by cunning effects men for Duncan Jones' retro SF feature, Moon, and speak to the director himself.
