Blue Movie!

In what can only be described as a 'marketing offensive', Doctor Manhattan emerged blue and clean last night from the roily Thames, dazzling all and sundry with his naked nuclear glory. Death Ray's Paul Tavner had a front seat on proud vessel The Golden Jubilee; here's his report…

Dr. Manhattan wasn't the only blue man on the Thames during last night's Watchmen promo extravaganza, but Death Ray braved the elements for long enough to see him rising from the murky river.

A shimmering 70-foot (ish) image of the nuclear giant was more or less successfully projected onto a cloud of vapour in front of the specially-lit London Eye. The only truly super super-hero in Zak Snyder's upcoming minutes-to-midnight epic was showing none of his occasional Mars-bound performance anxiety as he hovered before the assembled crowds. Disappointingly he didn't wield any of the destructive force which unlucky members of the VC are subjected to in Watchmen's alternate timeline Vietnam, but explosion fans can always rewatch 1:33 to 1:36 of the trailer to get their fix. Seeing the iconic smiley face splashed across the night sky was enough to whet any fan's appetite.

Despite the usual controversies attached to any Moore movie, the producers of Watchmen certainly know how to run a marketing campaign. Believe the hype or don't, but the movie is going to be big. Maybe not as big as a certain naked navy gentleman, but big nonetheless.

Watchmen is out on general release from Friday 6 March.
